History of the Winters High School Mascot
At Winters High School, our mascot has long been a symbol of pride, strength, and unity for generations of students, staff, and the community. Its evolution reflects the changing perspectives of our society and our commitment to fostering an environment of inclusivity and respect.
A Legacy of Pride
The Warriors mascot first appeared in 1938 when it was chosen as the name for the high school newspaper. By 1939, the Warriors name was adopted by the football team and quickly became an integral part of Winters High School’s identity. For many years, the mascot incorporated imagery tied to Native American culture, including a headdress and a spear with feathers, to signify strength and perseverance.
Adapting to Evolving Perspectives [Community perspectives, Implementing change]
As awareness grew around the cultural significance of these symbols to Indigenous communities, so did recognition of the need for respectful representation. In 2017, a community-wide discussion raised important questions about the appropriateness of these depictions. This led to a gradual transition to a revised representation: a spear held by the iconic red “W.”In September 2023, the Winters Joint Unified School District further affirmed its commitment to equity and inclusion by updating its board policies. These policies formally prohibit using racially derogatory or discriminatory mascots, nicknames, images, or practices, ensuring alignment with California Education Code and the district’s mission to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all students and community members.
The Warrior Spirit Today
Today, the Warriors mascot is represented by a clean, modern design: a spear held by the bold red "W." This updated imagery embodies the enduring Warrior spirit—a symbol of courage, humility, and resilience.
Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future
The modern Warriors mascot respects the traditions and roots of our community while reflecting a commitment to inclusivity. It symbolizes not just the strength of our students but also the unity of a diverse community working together toward a bright future. This is what it means to be a Warrior—and to carry forward the Spirit of Winters.
